Team News:
Loyola News-Benton Harbour 2009 Oct 3 Kevin Salgado won a 4-1 Dec over T Walker of Benton Harbor at the Bobo Brazil PAL Boxing club. Kevin was able to catch Tiptons long jabs with the palm of his right hand and counter back with quick hands to match Tiptons speed. He left Tipton confused and he couldn't figure Kevin out. Kevin used pressure backing his opponent up and was landing the right hand after the Jab. At the end of round two Kevin landed a clean left hand from the left handed stance. After the final bell a bad case of sportsmanship acurred when Kevin was walking back to the corner Tipton used vulgral Language. When the decision was announced Tipton was in anger as he exited the ring before accepting his trophy and began to scream. Kevin was coming off a close loss to the well experienced Christian Williams of Harvey I'LL on september 26th at the Loyola show. Next fight will be Oct 8th at St. Demetrouis church were he will box J Hernandez the son of professional fighter Miguel. Then it's on to San Antonio,Texas for the National PAL Tournament Oct 17th -Barry Show Fight oct 8th Kevin Salgado won a decision over Josh Hernandez. Edward Brown (loyola) won a decision over James Allen. The fight was a fund raiser at the St Demetrios Church on north sherdian road. Chicago Park District 2009 Kevin Salgado and Diego Chavez won the Chicago park district tournament last week then Kevin won another fight last Friday on the undercard of the Policemen vs the Fireman's Show . Qualifing Boxers from Illinois Missiori,Nebraska,Kansas and Iowa will square off to see who advances to the National Silver Gloves in February 17 April 2008 National Golden Gloves Update Junior Wright, Loyola Park Boxing, had a tough test in his very first match at the 2008 National Golden Gloves in Grand Rapids, MI. He faced Denis Douglin, the New Jersey Golden Gloves Champion and the 2007 Police Athletic League National Champion. Douglin, a strong and very aggressive southpaw, came out very fast in the first round and nearly overwhelmed Junior in the very first minute of the 1st round. A hard right hook to the body knocked Junior down. However, he got up, regrouped, and came back strong in the last 30 seconds of the round. Then, over the next two rounds he started getting on track, winning both rounds by slim margins. Unfortunately for Junior (good for Douglin though), the matches are scored on total punches landed throughout all three rounds, not on rounds won, however. So that meant that Junior had A LOT of points to make up from a shaky first round. The decision was a close one, but Douglin won a 3-2 split decision (3 judges had Douglin scoring more points, 2 judges had Junior scoring more). This was Junior's first National-level tournament, and unfortunately he had to face a very tough, strong, aggressive southpaw with considerably more national level experience in his very first match. He was very disappointed that he lost, but I think he took some confidence away from the experience - knowing now that he can compete and win at this level. I have very little doubt that he will win a National title in the next year or two. I was proud of his performance, if disappointed in the result. He came oh-so close despite a really disastrous start. PRIVATE COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER

We had a wonderful audience at the No Exit Cafe last night, truly diverse. I enjoyed meeting the neighborhood residents and the folks who came based on the Chicago Public Radio show. If you missed the program, scope it here: streaming | mp3

Thanks to Michael James for hosting the event and making some killer lasagna. It was nice to see the up-and-coming Loyola Boxing Academy family representing. And I'm very proud to announce that several people who saw the film on Monday came back to see it again on Wednesday. You guys rock! The general consensus is that everyone wants a copy of the movie and wants to know when they can see it again and show it to friends. We're working on it. Keep your eyes peeled to the boards. Sign up for the NEWSLIST on our CONTACT page and I'll let you know about upcoming screenings and special events. Coming asap to a theater near you...

June 6, 2006 -- Chicago, IL
ROGERS PARK PRIVATE PREMIERE!

this just in: everyone has been responding very well to shadow of a bout -- even the neighborhood kids were into it so much that a few of them came back to see it a second time last night. we raised some money for the current boxing team and the boxers and their families were proud to see their story on the big screen. a big thank you to carolyn, jeff, john and everyone who helped make the howard area community center screening a reality.
we had a nice turnout. coach barry and boxer montrel came to the afternoon workshop where we had about thirty kids learning about what it takes to make a movie. boxer edward and his mother lakita and kara, levar's mom, came to the evening screening. there were a fair share of new faces there, too. nice meeting everyone.
steve edwards from wbez chicago public radio interviewed me for the "848" radio program this morning. the segment will be broadcast tomorrow morning between 9 am and 10 am. steve said it will probably start at the end of the program around 9:35 - 9:40 am chicago time, which is the feature spot on the show!

cheers, kevin
